Preparing early and beyond education

I have been working in the education sector for 20 years. My experience includes, Early Years, Primary, Secondary and Further and Higher Education. Working with all ages has helped me to understand the impact of education at every stage of a young person’s life and how it plays a vital part in how they enter the workforce as young adults. How do I know this?
For the last seven years I have been working in a leading recruitment consultancy as a Marketing and Communications Manager. I set up the company’s Apprenticeship programme and have been heavily involved in assessment days.
I have seen first-hand, the impact of not having key soft skills such as being able to communicate, write and adapt to being an adult at work. I have lost count of how many apprentices have given up or been fired because of lack of experience and knowledge. I have watched first-class science graduates walk out of interviews and presentations or be fired in less than a month. Why? Simple. No preparation or understanding of what’s expected at the workplace.
Making that all important first impression is so important, there’s only one chance to nail it. Now, in the most uncertain of times, if you’re fortunate enough to be offered a job or a career opportunity, how do you continue to impress a prospective employer beyond the interview and build a career?
For me teaching and developing soft skills is so important. I have taken this knowledge and experience into my classroom and my teaching. Whether it’s a child in Year 1 or a young person in Year 11 studying for their GCSEs, soft skills is one of my passions and is part and parcel of my teaching.
